The Sweetest of All

Oct. 28, 2000

So many sweet things to be savored in life
To help us get through the storm and the strife

The clickety-clack of the elevated tracks
The joy of skipping over the sidewalk cracks
A cool day in summer, a warm day in winter
The pinch that you feel as you pull out a splinter

The catch of a breath after a climb
The peaceful passing of endless time
The way you look around after a stumble
Forgetting your effort to be ever so humble

A door tightly shut and the snap of the locks
The warmth that you feel when you put on your socks
Smooth enamel of your teeth after you've brushed
The search for the walnut after it's crushed

Hot soup in a spoon, waiting to be slurped
The laugh you let out after you suddenly burped
The wonder you feel as you strain hard to hear
The humanity you are when you feel a fear

The rush to eat ice cream before it starts dripping
The air that you're breathing, and the coffee you're sipping
Singing along when you remember the words
A day spent a-wandering, staring at birds

The rush in your heart as the light it turns green
There's much more to life than to see and be seen
After a long day, the pleasure of sleep
A shiny new present, all yours to keep

The creak of the floor as you head off to bed
The hum of a tune that's stuck in your head
The salt of a tear as it rolls down your cheek
The smile that you make and the joy that you seek

A death that reminds you how much you love living
The sorrow in taking, the joy of thanksgiving
The way a thing smells, when it's brand-spanking new
And the sweetest of all, to be loved by you
