I and I, in creation where
One's nature neither honors nor forgives ~

Love

I'd like to thank my wonderful wife (that sounds so much better than fiancée), Karen, for inspiring so many of the writings in the poetry section. She deserves most of the credit and none of the blame.

Love is ... LOVE! In September of 2002, Karen and I got married. See how I proposed to her. Brownie points if you know which Dylan song it is.

The ceremony and reception were held at the Chateau Bu-Sche', and the Rent-a-Rev officiated our wedding. Here's the Robert Frost poem he read aloud. We honeymooned in San Francisco and stayed at the Hotel Monaco.

For more about how Karen and I got together, see this page at my online dating guide. Karen works in the IT department of a trade association. Here's what she looked like to others in the late '70s.

You know I'm hot stuff!

We also have a wonderful mutt named Sport, a dachsund-beagle mix. Isn't he just the ...

Cutest — Dog — Ever?

(And of course he has a blog.) Meet Bob, Sport's new brother!

Work

I earned my bachelor's degree at Columbia College Chicago, where I studied journalism and received departmental honors.

In January 2003 I began reporting for Insurance Journal, an (almost) biweekly trade magazine for independent property/casualty agents and brokers. In September 2003 I was promoted to managing editor of IJ's new Midwest edition. I also edited the Midwest section of IJ's highly popular daily news Web site.

American Medical News
In July 2005, I joined American Medical News, "the newspaper for America's physicians."

I work as a reporter covering the medical ethics and patient safety beat for the newspaper's professional issues section.

Here is some general information about the newspaper and here's a "descriptive profile."

Parentage

My dad, Al O'Reilly, primarily sells auto insurance to the Spanish-language Chicago market through his two independent agencies, O'Reilly Insurance Agency and Seguros del Norte.

My mom, Sarah Bornstein (aka "The Stris") sits on the board of Women Employed and in 2001 was named one of "100 Women Making a Difference" by Today's Chicago Woman. She's also the human-resources director at the Neumann Association.

Et cetera

* Circle Bastiat is where I go to learn from my betters.
* I graduated form the Latin School of Chicago — a great place.
* If you want to buy me stuff, you should check out my Amazon wish list.
* For a taste of my interests, visit the links page and of course the blog.
* I type up letters, lots and lots of letters — using this thing.
* My middle initial stands for Bernard, which means "brave bear." Cute, huh?
